Texas Sheet Cake Brownies
Ingredients
- 17x11 pan (or 9x13)
- 2 Cups flour
- 2 cups sugar
- ¼ cup cocoa
- 1 stick (½ cup) butter
- ½ cup shortening (crisco)
- ½ cup buttermilk (or substitute 2 tsp vinegar or lemon juice in ½ cup of milk, or use powdered buttermilk)
- 1 cup of strong brewed coffee (or water if you don’t want coffee)
- 2 eggs
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp vanilla
Frosting
- 1 stick (½ cup) butter
- 2 tbsp cocoa
- ¼ cup milk
- 3 ½ cup unsifted powdered sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla
Steps
- Preheat oven to 400F
- Combine flour and sugar in large mixing bowl
- In saucepan, combine butter, shortening, coffee, and cocoa, stir and heat to boiling
- Pour boiling coffee mixture over flour/sugar mix
- Add buttermilk, eggs, baking soda, and vanilla
- Mix well - use wodden spoon or mixer on high
- Pour mixture into well buttered pan
- Bake 20 minutes at 400F or until done in center
- While baking, prepare frosting:
- in saucepan, combine butter, cocoa, and milk; heat to boil, stirring constantly
- Mix in powdered sugar and vanilla; stir until combined
- Pour warm mixture over brownies as soon as out of the oven
